Income Tax Calculator Guide

A practical guide to using Form16.com income tax calculators without mixing up salary, deductions, TDS, and regime choices.

Overview

What an income tax calculator does

An income tax calculator estimates your tax from salary, deductions, selected tax regime, and the applicable financial-year rules. It is useful before filing because it lets you compare the tax liability you expect with Form 16, payslips, AIS, and Form 26AS.

For salaried employees, the calculator is most helpful when it keeps salary, deductions, taxable income, tax, cess, and TDS visible in one flow.

  • Gross salary
  • Other income if any
  • Tax regime
  • Eligible deductions
  • Estimated annual tax and monthly TDS

Example

Typical calculator flow

  • Enter annual salary.
  • Choose old or new regime.
  • Add eligible deductions and exemptions.
  • Review taxable income, tax, cess, and monthly TDS estimate.

Calculator first, documents second

Use the calculator for planning, then confirm the final numbers with Form 16, AIS, Form 26AS, and official filing records.

Inputs

Inputs you should enter carefully

The quality of the estimate depends on the quality of your inputs. Annual salary should reflect the full financial year, not just one monthly payslip. Deductions should be entered only when they are eligible under the selected regime and supported by records.

  • Annual gross salary
  • Standard deduction
  • 80C and 80D deductions
  • HRA exemption if eligible
  • NPS 80CCD(1B)
  • Tax already deducted by employer

Example

Salary input example

If monthly gross salary is ₹1,00,000, the annual gross salary is ₹12,00,000 before adjusting for bonuses, increments, or previous employer salary. Use the annual figure where the calculator asks for annual salary.

Avoid duplicate deductions

Do not enter the same deduction twice. For example, if taxable salary already accounts for a deduction, adding it again can understate your tax.

Output

How to read calculator results

The result usually shows taxable income, tax before cess, health and education cess, final annual tax, monthly TDS estimate, and savings between regimes. The final filing tax can still change if you have interest income, capital gains, previous employer salary, or other income not entered.

  • Taxable income
  • Income tax before cess
  • Health and education cess
  • Final annual tax
  • Estimated monthly TDS

Example

Result interpretation

If estimated annual tax is ₹1,20,000, the monthly TDS estimate is about ₹10,000 across the year. Compare this with actual employer TDS to understand whether extra tax may be payable or a refund may arise.

Use related calculators

Use the old vs new regime calculator when regime choice is the main decision. Use the TDS calculator when employer deductions and already-deducted tax are the main concern.
