Form 16 Sample Explained

A section-by-section sample walkthrough that turns Form 16 from a dense certificate into a clean filing checklist.

Walkthrough

How to read a sample Form 16

A sample Form 16 should be read from top to bottom: identity details first, TDS certificate next, salary computation after that, and final tax reconciliation at the end.

The goal is not to memorize every line. The goal is to know what must match your records before filing.

  • Check identity
  • Review TDS
  • Read salary breakup
  • Verify deductions
  • Compare final tax with TDS

Example

Sample reading order

  • PAN and employer TAN.
  • Quarterly TDS.
  • Gross salary and deductions.
  • Tax payable and tax deducted.

Do this slowly

Most Form 16 mistakes are found by comparing one section with another, not by reading one number alone.

Certificate

Sample Part A fields

In a sample Part A, focus on the employer TAN, employee PAN, certificate period, and TDS deposited.

If these fields are clean, the tax-credit side of the document is easier to reconcile.

  • Name and address of employer
  • TAN and PAN of employer
  • PAN of employee
  • TDS certificate number if available

Example

Sample mismatch

  • Payslip TDS total: higher.
  • Part A total: lower.
  • Action: check Form 26AS and ask payroll.

Identity first

Do not start with tax calculation until PAN, TAN, and period details are correct.

Computation

Sample Part B fields

Sample Part B shows how salary becomes taxable income. Look for gross salary, exemptions, standard deduction, deductions, and final taxable income.

This is where missed HRA, 80C, or 80D declarations usually become visible.

  • Gross salary
  • Allowances exempt under rules
  • Standard deduction
  • Deductions under Chapter VI-A
  • Taxable income

Example

Sample deduction check

  • 80C shown: employer PF only.
  • Your ELSS not reflected.
  • Review whether it can be claimed while filing.
